We all know that cannabis has been legal for quite a few years now. However, scientists still have a long way to go in terms of understanding all the different aspects of cannabis. Research is still undergoing, and tests are still being completed every day on the many different cannabis compounds and the effects they have on humans.
Studies have already confirmed that cannabis offers pain relief. It’s also currently being used to treat numerous symptoms of various health conditions. But what else can cannabis do?
During the past couple of years, Covid-19 has been prevalent in altering everyone’s day-to-day life and it’s safe to say that a lot of people wish that everything can just go back to normal. With that being said, scientists may have finally discovered a breakthrough that can do just that. Continue reading to find out more!
How Cannabis Compounds Affect Covid
Just recently, a team of researchers affiliated with the Oregon State University conducted a study on how certain cannabis compounds may affect Covid-19. The study was led by a researcher from the Oregan State’s Global Hemp Innovation Center in the College of Pharmacy and Linus Pauling Institute, Richard van Breemen.
Based on their findings, they realized that two specific compounds can bind themselves to the proteins of SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus responsible for causing Covid-19. Once the cannabis compounds bind with the spike protein, it inhibits the virus from penetrating healthy human cells which otherwise, would’ve resulted in an infection.
It’s essentially a step that’s critical to the infection and replication cycle. The two compounds responsible for this occurrence are Cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA). The researchers were able to test the compounds’ effect against dominant and non-dominant variants of this virus.
The results showed that these cannabis compounds were equally effective against other variants as well. Including variant B.1.17, first detected in the United Kingdom and variant B.1.351 first discovered in South Africa. This very well means that the cell entry inhibitors could be used to prevent Covid-19 and shorten the infection period by halting the particles from attacking other healthy cells. Let’s learn more about these two compounds responsible for preventing Covid-19.
Cannabigerolic Acid (CBGA)
Cannabigerolic acid is one of the many cannabinoids found in various cannabis plants. It interacts with our endocannabinoid system also known as a network of receptors in the human body. CBGA is a foundational compound produced in the plant’s trichomes. It plays a significant role in producing other major cannabinoids that people tend to look out for such as:
- THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid)
- CBDA (Cannabidiolic Acid)
- CBCA (Cannabichromenic Acid)
If you couldn’t tell by the name, these acids eventually convert to THC, CBD and CBC — creating the abundance of desired effects everyone wants from using cannabis products. Some potential benefits you can reap from Cannabigerolic acid are combating cardiovascular disease, reducing the chances of getting metabolic disorders, as well as targeting colon cancer cells and preventing further growth. However, more studies and tests need to be completed on animals and humans before these results are confirmed.
Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA)
As we previously mentioned, Cannabigerolic acid converts cannabinoid compounds to create cannabidiolic acid. CBDA is a bioactive compound that can be found in numerous cannabis plants. CBDA inhibits the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme that is commonly associated with inflammation after injury.
It interacts with our endocannabinoid system to relieve the pain that usually occurs from inflammation. After decarboxylation occurs, CBDA turns into Cannabidiol also referred to as CBD. CBD is used to treat a number of ailments and improve symptoms from certain health conditions including:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Epilepsy
- Nausea
- Chronic Pain
- Glaucoma
Studies are still continuously being done but so far, the results seem to be quite beneficial. CBD can be found in many cannabis products such as edibles, topicals, flowers, concentrates and more. Check out the selection of CBD products from XpressGrass today!
